An engine in the same family as the 250 will be easier, (270,290, 335, 350 & such) but if you already have an 8.3 that make a big difference. be aware the 8.3 is 505 cubic inches, the 250 (& family) is 855 cubic inches. No replacement for displacement. sounds like a project, go for it

Richard, Rusted gears = no big deal, as long as we are talking about light surface rust. Big, deep pits are obviously not good. Gears are comparatively crude devices, (contrast ball bearing here, which need fine tolerances), In a perfect world, no compromises are needed, go from there.

If the fuel pressure didn't drop at high idle, the engine rpm would continue to climb until it grenaded itself.

Drive around with no air in tires.

I put a viscous drive fan on mine, now I don't sound like an A-10 when I go down the road. I had to do some machine work on the hub, cut and balance the blades, and modify the fan shroud, but the end result was worth the effort. I think the fan donor was a GMC Brigadier with a 6v-92 detroit...

Overheat a 3116 once and the rings go soft. Engine then uses oil. Electronic version of this motor is the 3126. The control interface on the 3126 will pull the fuel rate down when the temp. goes up, 3126 is a much better engine. been there, done that, got the hat.
