Sometimes it does that to me coming out of 4wdL. I blip the throttle, go up to park, back down to N, and it usually mashes right back in there just fine.

I advise not timing the WAIT light, but looking at your voltmeter. You will notice, at least on mine, that the glowplugs are still being energized after the wait light goes off.
I strongly disagree. Having those front wheels pulling does wonders for keeping the back end from flying out, plus you get the added resistance for more subtle slowing down than with breaks. Plus you get traction, which is at a premium in icy conditions.
But what do I know, I just drive on...
