I am 30 miles N.W. of Peoria IL. My condolences on your relocation to the People's Republic of Illinois.
There are plenty of small towns left in central IL. Pick out some towns near Springfield which look interesting then go to the website city-data.com. You can pull up detailed info...
If you rule out the fuel system, you might want to consider changing the coil. I seem to recall that a coil can fail gradually and when partially failed can cause power loss under load.
Re: distributor caps - if a cap is cracked and it is arcing internal to the cap sometimes "carbon tracks"...
Seem to recall a rule of thumb re: backfiring. If it backfires thru the exhaust it's fuel related. If it backfires thru the carb, it's ignition related.
Also recall that a bad ignition condensor can cause the symptoms you describe.
Like others have said, change the points AND condensor...
MATH1960:
You and I are in a similar state of mind.
I like simple, no frills vehicles. The M1009 fits that category plus it can get 20mpg. I bought an M1009 last fall fully expecting to spend time and money to correct problems caused by hard use, deferred maintenence and sitting idle...

I'm located 30 miles north of Peoria in Wyoming IL.
May come a time I could provide some business from Peoria IL to just west of Pueblo CO.

I live in a little town 90 miles southeast of the Quad Cities. Spent a few nights in Quarters #1 at Rock Island Arsenal when my brother was commander there.
I was planning to arrive in Canon City mid May and depart in the 1st week of June. However I may have to push my departure out a...
Like someone else said - search the CUCV forum on this website for starter relay modifications.
The relay is located under the dash next to the large Canon type connector. This seems to be a weak link in the system and there is a lot of info here on how to upgrade it.
When it goes bad either...
I used a fender washer large enough to completely cover the hole and ran a bolt plus regular washers and lock washer thru the fender washer to the inside of the cab. Ran a bead of RTV silicone between the fender washer and body panel before tightening it down. No leaks so far. Paint it green and...
Excellent info - thanks. I had not found the ASSIST site you linked to.
The images you provided are from:
MIL-T-12459E TIRE, PNEUMATIC: FOR MILITARY GROUND VEHICLES
1.1 Scope. This specification covers pneumatic tires and tire flaps,
when applicable, for mounting on ground vehicles for...
Bettendorf:
1. Vehicle looks great.
2. Bettendorf as in Iowa/Quad Cities?
3. I recognize the park where you took the photos - on the slope of Cheyenne Mtn just outside Ft Carson. I hang around Canon City CO as much as possible. Plan to be there in a couple of weeks in my M1009 if I can...
I do not have an NDT for direct comparison but my recollection is that NDT tread bars extended farther to the sides thus giving the squared shoulder profile. I also believe the contact patch area was relatively flat rather than the radiused or domed profile of this tire.
The only tires I...
Here are two photos of one U.S. Rubber 9.00 x 16 on a five hole Budd. The others (US RUbber and Denman look the same.
From a front profile view the tread surface is obviously radiused. Where the tread bars wrap around the shoulder and blend into the sidewall that surface is angled in from the...
My M37 along with the five NDCC's on it was destroyed in a fire. All of my photos of the truck are the 35mm film variety and I do not own a scanner. I could provide photos of a mounted 9.00 x 16 without the truck if that would be of interest.

Jim
Fine looking truck.
Hard to say for certain but the tires in the 1st photo look like square shouldered NDT's.
I have spent some time searching for official records re: the evolution of military offroad tread patterns and have come up with an empty sack.
From tires I've owned I know that...
If anyone would like to share some advice concerning changing tires, this would be appreciated. Helpful advice would include problems or ways to support the axle, remove lug nuts, and handle heavy wheels.
I'd invest in a bottle jack if I were you and keep it in the truck. Based on the height...
I was hoping you would define "Hydroscopic" for me... I'm lost with that one
From Merriam Webster Online:
hydrophobic : lacking affinity for water
hydrophilic: of, relating to, or having a strong affinity for water
hygroscopic : readily taking up and retaining moisture
hydroscopic ...
I stand corrected - hydrophylic means "water loving" - thanks.
Hydrophobic means incapable of absorbing water.
Hygroscopic means capable of absorbing water from the air.
My excuses are: (1) Last chemistry class ~1976, and (2) boozeheimers.
When it comes to the fact that silicone rubber...
As others have pointed out, DOT 5 fluid is hydrophobic, not hydrophylic.
DOT 3 is a glycol fluid. DOT 5 is a silicone fluid.
The types of rubber NOT recommended for use with silicone fluids are silicone rubber and fluorosilicone rubber. Like you were taught in high school chemistry...
