I had to replace the combination/proportioning valve on my M1009. GM does not stock replacements but an outfit called InLine Tube has them in stock along with a lot of other brake parts for classic vehicles.
The unit visually looks good - machined from brass barstock. Had to swap...
I spent about 30 years in the rubber R&D, engineering and manufacturing business. In my last assignment at Caterpillar I had design control for o-rings.
Silicone is not a good choice for diesel fuel. Reason it that it will swell up and eventually double in volume, and become very soft in the...
Replace the cable, hook up new starter.. go to connect first battery ZAP! a shock
Same thing happened to me recently.
The original battery cable terminal/lug on the starter end has a couple of tabs. These tabs are design to engage recesses on the starter solenoid and thereby prevent the...
Do not get personal, posting in the forums(good humor excepted).
That applies to all, I assume.
NMC, are you going to document and share your conversion? It may be helpful to others that choose to do the same. We would appreciate your effort and time to share this.
I can do that if you...
1. It's done.
2. No hacking was involved.
3. If you have some sort of personal problem, either see the Chaplain or discuss it with me like a rational adult.

As was said, your truck, your call. I just want to make it clear to others considering a 12 volt conversion - you are no further ahead, and if cold weather is a factor - 24 volt is MUCH MUCH BETTER.
This may be true but I have not seen any hard data to back up this assertion, only anecdotal...
Had I not been "encouraged" to retire early I'd borrow the gear from work and check it out.
All I have is a cheapo little chicom made multimeter so I guess this will remain unanswered.

"My personal theory is that the voltage drop in the main starter wire is not as much on a 24v system. You're not having to try and "push" as many amps on 24v as you do with 12v to get the same amount of work done."
I think that is one of the three legs of the Ohns Law tripod. Amp draw goes...
Sidebar question:
If a person put an ammeter in the starter cable could that data be used to back calculate actual starter power draw?
I find this stuff interesting. To me, electricity is in the same family as magic.

Thanks for the Delco Remy data. According to Delco for a gear reduction unit the 12V starter uses from 40% to 111% more amps than the 24V. The 12V is anywhere from 20% slower to 4% faster than the 24V. Wonder if the same is true for direct drive starters? I assume the DD starters have to work...
24v will turn the starter much better
If comparing 24 vs 12 volt starting, with the same pair of batteries and same engine (starter torque/power required to crank the engine), does Ohm's Law back up that assertion?

Used to have a 1962 M37-B1 w/w but the building it was stored in burned down.
My banker/accountant/bookeeper/wife won't let me buy an M35 or M109.
"Really babe, the M35 is just a big pickup truck and the 109 would make a great camper".
Sheesh...have to settle for my now bastardized M1009...
These was no cost to convert as I needed a new starter anyway. As for time, mine is not worth much anymore.
12V inverters are available and probably cheaper.
The resistor bank is obsolete - if it fails....
I now have one less alternator/alternator belt to fail way out in the boonies.
I...
The transmission itself may be a fine piece of equipment but the pneumatic controller is a basket case.
I was an engineer at Caterpillar Inc. I was responsible for a bunch of rubber parts including o-rings. The transmission factory asked me for help on this controller. It had a lot of...
I'm going to be the devil's advocate here and ask why you want to convert it to straight 12V? You have the unique ability to run both 12V and 24V stuff, a far superior voltage for demanding starts.
Double devil's advocate....if a person will not be running 24V military radios and does not own...
If you're going to scrap the tires being dismounted using WD-40 or some other petroleum based fluid to loosen up rusted in place beads is OK. Bear in mind this technique helps because the petro based fluid is softening/dissolving the rubber. Not good if you plan to reuse the tire.
Ditto what...
If you plan to re-use the tire you're dismounting, driving on it to break the beads loose from the rim is probably a bad idea.
Good chance of breaking cords in the tire carcass and/or damaging the beads.
A wedge hammer designed for breaking beads costs maybe $30.
$50 to breakdown and...
