    Engine block heater

Probably my bad search skills, but I looked and didn't find a thread on this... With fall almost here and winter on the way, I'm thinking about adding a block heater to the truck so I can start it a little more easily on those cold mornings here in Kansas. The installation seems pretty straight...

    Melting instrument cluster light lenses

All, I replaced one of my instrument light lenses (the little green-topped turret guys that screw in and out to control brightness) because it had melted. Looking at the other one, I see that it's starting to melt too. I noticed after I tried to turn the lens to change the brightness the other...

    Source for radio locks

In my search for a lock to complete the RT-524 install in my humvee, I came across a report (http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/782109.pdf) about locking devices that were tested in the 70's. The lock replaces one of the clamps on the MT1029 radio mount. I don't live in a high-crime area...

    Mount H1 bumper to Humvee

So I bought an H1 bumper (it was just $150, so what the heck)--it's like the airlift rear bumper, but "backless"--instead of being a complete section of 2x8x1/4 tube it's just the "face" of the bumper. It came with two big brackets to mount it, that bolt to the H1 and then the bumper bolts to...

Cool option for mounting a "step" to access the bed

From someone called "Gobi" these are apparently on backorder at the moment. Pretty cool though.

Options for mounting spare in HMMWV bed

I've not added an airlift rear bumper (yet) to my humvee, so at the moment my spare is just laying flat in the "bed" of my four-man soft top truck. However, that 160lb wheel and tire could be an unwelcome intruder into the cabin should I have to stop hard (currently it's tied to the tailgate...

Wait light not visible in bright light

Another question, of course. :-D Yesterday afternoon I went to pick my kids up from school in the truck. It happened to be parked in the driveway so that the sun was coming in from the rear and full on the dash. I couldn't for the life of me see if the wait light was lit or when it went out...

    Brush guard bolts

Still going over the truck and finding little things... like the hood hinge pins that didn't have cotter pins in them. Checking the brush guard (original style) I noticed that the bolts holding it on seem under sized. There's about 1/4" of wiggle and the retaining pins are hard to get in/out...

    Battery holddown

So, in my fiddling around to solve my generator problem, I realized that the two civilian batteries under the seat are just loose in there :-x What have you done to hold these down? I'll eventually switch to the correct batteries and hold down, but for the moment I need a solution.

    Easy alternator check

I looked the the TM and didn't see an obvious answer... The volt gauge is in the yellow when running and battery voltage shows 25 at the battery terminals. I was expecting 28v if the alt was charging. The old "hold a small piece of metal on the back to check field strength" thing didn't work...

    Under Seat Storage

Had an idea last night that I thought I'd post... I've been scratching my head about storing stuff under the rear seats. I don't recall that we ever had anything useful (except some chain and recovery gear) stored in them, because the insides get wet. So there's several cubic feet of storage...

VPC (Vehicle Power Conditioner) for VIC-1

Working on installing a VIC 1 in my M998. I see in the TM that there's supposed to be a VPC installed in the radio deck. A google search didn't return any useful results--I'd like to know this parts NSN (if it exists) and perhaps a source/alternative so I can get my system up and running. TIA.

    Splash shield bolt attachment

So I have the under the hood jack stowage box and jack, but I'm having what I suspect is a nut problem again. The upper bolt that holds the splash shield on doesn't seem to grab once inserted into the section that the airlift loop is attached to. That piece is closed on the top, so I can't see...

    Rear seatbelt install problem

Like a bad penny, I'm back with another question. I got the rear seat belts installed this evening, but ran into a little problem that I can't seem to solve... On the passenger side, where the seat belt latch mounts to the tunnel, I can't get the bolt to tighten. It's just spinning. Looking...

    Photos of my truck

Again, thanks for all the help. I meant to post these last week, but got distracted by fan belts, lights, etc. My 75-year-old parents were visiting yesterday, and of course had to have a ride. My dad, a former RTO, talked fondly of his days driving a MUTT. When it was my mom's turn, we...

    Back on the road

Thanks to all the good info and helpful folks here at SS, I got my M998 back on the road this afternoon. Drove over to the college I'm attending (McPherson College's Automotive Restoration program, working on my 3rd degree) to use a die to clean up the rear bumper clevis bolts. Took my...

    Belt routing diagram (weak google-fu)

My NA 6.5 broke down on the way home, and I have now new belts in hand. However, the nifty diagram I saved off the Internet seems to have disappeared, and the TM drawing I have isn't as clear as I'd like. A search using Google and/or the forum didn't return what I was hoping for. Somewhere...

Remove remains of instrument light cover...

Next question (prepare for 100s more): anyone got a good method for removing the remains of a broken instrument panel light cover from the housing? One of mine was broken off and then apparently glued back in (there's glue on the bulb, even) and I now need to get the remains of the threaded...

Source for under hood jack storage

OK, now I've got real problems. :-) Not only do I have this giant green thing in my driveway, I'm figuring out all the nifty stuff I need to buy to bring it back to a "more-like-it-was-issued" state. Ordered a fire hydrant for the bracket next to the driver's seat. Buying some steel to make my...

    Should have listened :-)

Well, I'll bore you with all the details below, but I made it MOST of the way home from Tennessee to Kansas in my new-to-me M998. I spent last week looking to beg, borrow, or rent a truck and trailer. It's a personal thing, but I wasn't willing to lie to UHaul. Partly because I figure if the...
