Need general deisel tips, getting my first friday

The main reason your ambulances have the high idle is to increase the charging system output to handle the increased electrical load caused by all of the accessories. Most of the high idle systems are handled by load controllers that sense the electrical loads. The load controllers will also...

New guy here - couple of ?'s

Andy - Welcome to the forum. If the engine is turning over the missing belt will not cause the engine to not start. After checking the fuel I'd check the glow plug operation. You can find information on checking the glow plug system in the FAQ post at the top of the page or you can check out...

    Deadly shakes

I had "Death Wobble" with my 1031. I tried everything you did to cure the problem without any luck. The cure for mine turned out to be rebuilding the king pins. I bought a kit that had new bushings and springs. The repair was easy. Some people just shim the springs with fender washers, but the...

    Need M1031 generator wiring help!

I've had to replace two of the magnetic sensors. They are pretty reliable unless the wires get broken. If you get in touch with the people at Muncie, they might be able to tell you how to test the sensor. I don't remember any specific test procedure in the TM, but there should at least be...

    add-on filters

I'm not too sure about installing a filter for the power steering. Any type of restriction will have an impact on both the steering and the brakes. I'd lean more toward flushing the fluid on a scheduled basis, but that's just me... As far as the fuel filter, there was a thread a short while...

    add-on filters

I added a Perma-Cool remote transmission filter kit on my '56. The '56 has a th400 in it and the kit does not allow the removal of the factory filter (not that I would want to remove it). A Wix 51515 filter replaces the Perma-Cool filter when it comes time for a filter change. The filter...

    Need M1031 generator wiring help!

I've had to replace two of the magnetic pickups and they aren't cheap. The cost of the trigger doesn't look to be too bad. Remember to replace the o-ring when you replace the trigger. Smitty

    Need M1031 generator wiring help!

If you go to MunciePower.com you can pull up a good breakdown of the PTO. Look under "Tools" - "M-Power", yours will be the "TG" series. Smitty

    Need M1031 generator wiring help!

Is the shaft for the shifter moving or just the lever? I've seen the bolt for the shift lever come loose on these Muncie PTOs and that will allow the lever to move without moving the shaft. Smitty

    Need M1031 generator wiring help!

If the plate is still on the door to the generator panel, it has the wiring schematic for the generator. If you don't have that plate let me know and I'll do my best to get a decent photo for you. Smitty

    1031 contact maintenance truck

If you are going to plug that welder into the single phase outlet, pay attention to the amperage rating of the unit. The 208 single phase on the panel is limited to 15 amps and this really limits what you can use it to operate. I run a plasma cutter out of mine and I'm limited to cutting thin...

J code motor in other base vehicles

I spent my time in the AF maintaining vehicles. The Suburban would have been maintained on the same scheduled maintenance plan as the rest of the general purpose vehicles. Smitty

    M1028/1008 Ring and Pinion Gears

I've also changed my gears to 3.73. I went with the 3.73 gears because I still needed some bottom-end torque to get the truck going with the heavy load it is always carrying. The 3.73 gears are combined with some 33" tires and it is a decent compromise between getting usable power while lowering...

How much rear tire skip is normal w/1008?

That's just the nature of the Detroit. You don't really even notice it after a while. Application of the throttle will increase the lock-up as you go through a turn, so you might try letting up on the throttle if possible. The Detroit doesn't require any special additives since it has no...

How much rear tire skip is normal w/1008?

The Detroit Locker in the back is responsible. Normal operation for this type of differential. Smitty

    odiron Coolant Filter Kit

Most of the coolant filters that I replace are mounted lower than what you have here. If you install the filter in a lower location, remember to install shut-off valves in the inlet and outlet lines. It will cut down on coolant loss and a big mess when changing the filters. Smitty
