In the process of doing a 12 volt conversion

Remove the condensor, including the short piece of wire that goes to the condensor. Smitty

can anyone tell me if this is a gear reduction starter

Re: RE: can anyone tell me if this is a gear reduction start I'd have to agree with the multi-weight oil. I had a friend running 30wt oil in a car way back when I was stationed in N. Dakota. During the winter he couldn't get his car started. The starter just couldn't turn the crank. We...

    Gel batteries

I used to have problems with lead/acid batteries shorting out in the front-end loaders when I was in the service. These loaders would spend 5 days per week doing their bit during rapid runway repair. This repair was being done as different CE units were evaluated on their war-time...

    Adjustable Kingpins for m1008?

Did your mechanic actually check to see if the axle tube is bent? It could just be time for a king pin rebuild kit. I'd recommend finding the problem before you start throwing parts at it, since that can get pretty expensive without a real solution. Smitty

Siren and Light Controls in MP CUCV

You might try looking up Whelen or Federal signal on the web for schematics on the wiring of these systems. 319 is right about the mechanical siren mounting, dirt getting into the basket on these things can cause some real problems. Smitty

    M1009 Key same as M1031?

When you go to pick up your truck take a can of penetrating fluid with you. I took one of my "universal CUCV keys" with me, but could not get it to turn the tumbler cylinder. Since we had changed quite a few of the keys when I was in the service I figured this one had been rekeyed. I lined...

    converting m1009 to 12V

We had some of these on site when I was stationed at Hofn Iceland. As far as the conversion from 24 volt to 12 volt, the charging systems on both are pretty simple. You remove a couple of components, reroute a couple of wires and change the starter. I don't see any reason to change it if...

    converting m1009 to 12V

I was planning on leaving mine 24 volt until my starter went bad. I changed it over to 12 volt with a gear reduction type starter. It turns over much faster than my 24 volt starter did. I understand the mentality of keeping the trucks original, but I have no real need for a 24 volt system and...

    Cucv as a daily driver

I changed the gearing in my 1031 from 4.56 to 3.73. Doing that and putting on some 33" tires made it fine for my trips between stations. I'm still only getting between 14 and 15 mpg, but that's with the box loaded with tools and parts. Smitty

Added air tank to the M1031, looking for a light

Added air tank to the M1031, looking for a light

Re: RE: Added air tank to the M1031, looking for a light Thanks for the info. I went to the site and found the lights I'll need. Do you happen to know the difference between the shockproof and the regular lights? I'm guessing the shockproof are isolated in some way. Smitty

Important Fuel Injection Pump question, please help

Does one need special tools or equipment to replace the throttle shaft seals? Is it something that can be done on the truck without pulling the pump? It looks like the intake manifold will need to be pulled to gain access to the shaft. I ask because my pump is leaking in the same location...

Added air tank to the M1031, looking for a light

I went ahead and added another air tank to my work truck so I could have twice the reserve capacity. Taz sent me a tank and mounting brackets and I just installed it under the existing tank. I need to run by the store and get a couple of fittings to finish plumbing it into the system. I'm...

    transmission fluid

Like was mentioned above, check for vacuum leaks. The vacuum hoses on many of these trucks are shot since many still have the original rubber hoses. Smitty

    My 1028 hauling a load

Lowering the tire pressure under load allows the sidewalls to flex more. This flexing creates heat and leads to sidewall failure. Smitty

    My 1028 hauling a load

You see a lot of this on engines that don't spend a lot of time at full operating temperatures. The moisture just builds up over time, but a good long hot run will usually clear it right up. Smitty

6.2 turning over, but not starting.

After seeing that air intake piping, I need to start hitting the junk yards. I'm guessing that type of system would fit well on my CUCV... Smitty

    why an NP208 in m1008?

Although I'd take the 205 over the 208 any day of the week, I have to admit that the 208 has held up well in the CUCV. I can only think of two 208s that we had to change in the CUCVs while I was in the service and I was in for most of the expected life span of this truck. If I remember...

6.2 turning over, but not starting.

The decal on the air cleaner will tell you if it's a "J" code engine. It isn't a 24 volt electrical system. The accessories are set up differently than the CUCV engines. Smitty
