Chances are the mileage isn't correct. The Chevy speedos/odometers/fuel gauges are known for not working, so the Mil. would swap them out a lot. The documents the previous owner of my 1009 got when he bought it from auction said it had 26k. But he swapped in a different cluster, that one had 44k...
The torn one should definitely be replaced at some point. Without the boot, grease doesn't stay in the ball and socket anymore, plus dust and water can more easily get inside and cause further wear and tear.
When it comes to steering parts, when in doubt...replace it.
And you might as well...
In a M1008 3.73 or 4.10 gears with a 700R4 would be great. The overdrive really helps on the the highway, and the 1st gear is lower than a TH400 so it gets the truck moving a little easier (which is better for city MPG's). I'd think with a 700R4 and 3.08's you'd be lugging quite a bit in...
I'm sure being in Alaska, you have a higher altitude/cold weather blend of fuel most (or all) of the year...which usually packs less of a punch than standard warm weather fuel. Vehicles in places that switch between summer and winter blends of gas and diesel experience worse fuel mileage running...
I think to have more control and to get more money out of it, you should sell the soft-top separately from the truck. Sell it with the hardtop on, and mention "I also have a brand new soft-top that I'll sell for $xxx" And if they do want both then you can do a package deal...
The soft tops are...
Sounds like you have some fuel issues. That would be a main cause for poor mileage. A small V8 or 6 cyl wont save you anything as far as fuel mileage goes in an M1008...in addition to the cost associated with installing a completely different engine.
Those plugs are just rubber grommets. They are there so that the cables running out to the antennas can pass through the cap while keeping it relatively sealed. It's not a stock GM part. You will have to buy a universal rubber plug or make a custom a plug for it. I think I even remember seeing...
I was under the impression the M101 was the way to go with CUCV's, although being near the edge of the M1009's capacity, considering that they weigh around 1300lbs empty. And the M105's are the heavier trailers meant for the deuce.
Getting lower gears would help a lot with towing.
That looks awesome! F250/350's have pretty comfy seats too. What did you all do on the floor-side of things...mounting and such? Also what about seatbelts?
I would imagine with the 3.08's you could pull 3000 or so. It just wont do hills that well. Tongue weight wont change, but it could be limited depending on what type/rating of hitch you have. Check around in the search function I think there are a few towing capacity/"what have you towed with...
I have heard the opposite. The D70 has a weaker pinion design. Granted when hooked up to a 6.2 diesel I don't think there is much worry about destroying an axle due to too much torque.
D70's were used in 1-ton dually GM pickups (normal pickup w/the wide fenders), the 14 bolts were used in a...
What he said, lots of guys do this to their 1009/K5's for added strength with bigger tires and/or offroading and for lower gear ratios. It should be pretty simple and it works.
Also, what kind of offroading do you want to do with you 1009? That can be a factor in your decision to swap axles.
What exactly are your plans with the D70? Or what are you trying to accomplish? I believe they are several inches wider than a 10, 12 or 14bolt. And I think the spring perches are in different locations than a single rear wheel axle.
3 inch would probably sound better and look better. Small pipes tend to rap and pop more. Plus CUCV's have 2 1/4" exhaust...so dropping it down to 2" would probably hurt performance a little. I think stepping up to 3" turbo-type mufflers and running 3" from the mufflers out the bed would sound...
True...it definitely didn't have a great title. He could have phrased it better. But give the guy a break. If he wants his stacks, let him have his stacks...he obviously likes the look and is going to put them on whether a 6.2 can start a fire or not. At least he's putting them on a...
Good thing this thread has gotten so off topic... As has been mentioned before just a bunch of veteran SS members trolling their own forum.
Almost no useful information has come from the three pages of this thread, other than the handful of suggestions on what muffler(s) to use, and that...
I don't know how to make it sound like more of a diesel. Are you thinking along the lines of a modern turbodiesel (cummins/duramax/powerstroke)? Cuz there is no way to make a 6.2 sound like those.
If you want to hear more of the diesel engine clatter, put stock-type mufflers on it. If you want...
