I think he means using the carrier from his old front axle. He said he swapped out the front axle.
As far as I know the front and rear carrier are the same and will work interchangeably as long as the spline count is the same (which shouldn't be a problem since its they are both stock axles)...
That would be really awesome! I always liked the way the round-light C/K's looked. Although, I believe you would have to change the fenders and hood in addition to the grill. They altered them slightly to make them more aerodynamic. The years were 1973-80 (1980 had some models with the old...
The cheapest easiest bolt up is probably the SM465...they were used in GM pickups, vans, and medium trucks from the late 60's until the mid/late 80's they are nearly bullet-proof. You can pick them up used for $100-300, and get them rebuilt for a few hundred more. However the only thing you gain...
Yeah, it's not a military thing...just a Chevy thing. What everyone else said; check the obvious stuff first, then work your way down the check list. Also, take the cluster out and check for dust and dirt. My original cluster was full of fine silty dust. Lubing the speedo and speedo cable would...
Yeah that sounds like a great deal. It's hard to find even a non-running/parts 1008 for around $1k. The interiors on all CUCV's are usually in need of TLC. There's LOTS of info on this site to help you learn about these trucks though, they are fairly simple. Lots of guys on here were totally...
:ditto: What he said.
I wouldn't have an issue with a plastic tank. I ran a 93 Ford Ranger in a demo derby a couple years ago. It had a stock plastic tank. It was really hard to get out, we beat the crap out of trying to get it out, big pry bars, sharp edges, squishing it a little, etc. We...
A lot of guys do Cummins swaps on the old K-series trucks/Burbs. A few SS members have done it as well. If I were going to swap engines on a 1008 it would have to be a 12valve 6BT Cummins and a NV4500 manual trans. 100%. You can upgrade them cheaply and reliably to put down 300-400hp and still...
Are they DOT (or at least euro approved? A lot of LED's are not approved for headlights.
Also to the original poster, a lot of companies make conversion kits to swap out the sealed beam units to halogen bulbs (LMC, Summit, etc). The conversion and harness upgrade are on my list of mods.
I did a little bit more research. LSSV = light service support vehicle...which sounds like its the modern CUCV. The COMBATT is a lightly armored version or Commercial Based Tactical Truck, which Canada calls the MILLCOT. I'm sure there isn't a whole lot of difference between the...
These CUCV-III's are designated COMBATT (commercially based combat truck). I just saw a slightly newer (2007-present) model Silverado. Didn't get a real good look at it though. It was black with a grill guard and a blackout light on the grill guard. I wasnt sure what to make of it.
I agree, I feel like it wouldn't actually take 5 hours to change a water pump on anything...let alone be worth $500. The way they time auto repairs is ridiculous, something will book in at .8 of an hour, but in real life it takes double that, meanwhile something else will book at 5 hours and...
$500 sounds about right. According to Alldata: the water pump on a 6.2 rates in at around 5 hours. So you figure shop time somewhere around $75-100/hr and your in the $500 range.
I need to replace mine. It's leaking just a little bit (haven't had to even top off the reservoir), I bought the...
That's exactly what happens on the stock GP system. You should do a glow plug resistor bypass. It's a really quick mod, and it stops the cascading failure. Search for it, there are several good threads on it.
There's a Grand National with a Duramax and one in a 70 Chevelle also... So I would imagine that if it can fit and work in a mid-size GM car, it can fit in a K5. But as was said before, with enough money/time/skill you can do anything.
However, I think the biggest obstacle is that the...
Mine runs on the inside of the frame rail until it's just about inline with the t-case/driveshaft u-joint, then it runs over the top of the frame and continues on to the front. It shouldn't be too hard to trace the fuel lines all the way to the mech. fuel pump.
I put my inline electric pump...
Sounds like a pretty good price for a complete 1 ton axle.
Few questions:
-Is your truck a 1009 or 1008/28?
-What are you planning on doing for the front axel?
-Are you sure it has a 3.73 ratio?
Check the fluid in it to make sure it doesn't show signs of abuse, dirt, contamination. Maybe...
Thats awesome!
I've seen a couple M1008's in a few Nat. Guard/Army Reserve yards in Wisc. Never seen any 08's or 09's actually being driven on the road though (aside from one or two civilian/municipal owned ones).
