I installed ORD's crossover steering kit and love it. IMHO, you don't need the hydro assist steering unless you are planning some serious and hard-core off-roading. I have posted a couple of photos in post #56 of my rebuild thread.
Also check the wheel bearing tightness, spring bushing...
48cj2a - would you happen to have the GM part number of that 4000 rpm tach with fuel gauge? I have a long-distance source for a few NOS tachs but he doesn't know what they fit and doesn't want to open the boxes.
Thanks in advance.
I second the caution comment from AceHigh regarding those internal bolts possibly falling down in the engine. When I removed my internal bolts, I used a special socket magnet that held them tight while extracting them out through the oil tube hole.
Like hundreds (or maybe even thousands) of other CUCV owners, I would like to install temperature and oil pressure gauges to monitor engine conditions. Let's face it - the Idiot Lights are for, well, idiots, I guess. Although a tachometer would be nice, such an instrument is not an absolute...
Speddmon - You have to use calipers from a 1977 El Dorado Cadillac which have emergency brake capability. I explained this in my thread http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?52121-Rear-Disc-Brakes&highlight=rear+disc+brakes
Hope this helps.
The rear load-leveling proportioning valve will have no effect on rear disc brakes, assuming the valve is adjusted properly. For proper valve adjustment see post #75 in my rebuild thread.
Hope this helps.
Clepto - You will need to add Zero-Rates and move the front axle forward 1". Then trim the trailing edge of the front fender well all the way back to the inner fender, and fill the cavity with flexible body filler to keep out mud and water. Regarding the leading edge of the front fender, I...
Reply to Dunegoon - I built my 20" split rims in 1985 to run on a K30 SRW civi truck. Back then, 20" wheels on pick-ups were unheard of. Nowdays, it seems 20" wheels on Caprice pimp-mobiles are commonplace. There may be a source out there making a 20" wheel with the correct bolt pattern, however...
It will only bolt up one way. If you put the pin in the wrong hole, the bolts will not line up with the threaded holes.
Make sure you use the correct size magnet in the socket to hold the bolt head to prevent dropping it down in the front of the engine.

I ran 11.00/20 NDT on a new 1985 K30 single rear wheel civi truck for 10 years. That truck had a 5" lift.
My current rig is a fully rebuilt/restored '84 M1028 lifted 5" running the same wheels & tires.
Hope this helps.
Here's a link to the non-electric propane heater. 25,000 BTU with a push button piezo lighter. Sounds like a jet engine. 12" high. The heat goes straight up. Placed on frozen ground under the oil pan, this thing will warm your engine enough to crank in case of GP failure. Will boil water...
Like many on this site, I bypassed my GP resistor to circumvent cascading failure. There are numerous threads on here which will explain why this is a must-do modification.
Back in the '80's I hunted in N.W. Colorado on a sheep farmer's 4,000 acres. He drove a diesel Chevy all over his farm, and kept with him at all times a 20 pound propane tank and a small propane-fired salamander heater. The heater did not require electricity, and was lighted by a push-button...
Well........... ahem .......... I will be the first to respond.
1.) - I am preparing to install oil pressure and temperature gauges in my M1028 because I don't want a malfunctioning idiot light to lead to the destruction of my 12,800 original mile engine. It has nothing to do with desire...
