You want the bottom left switch up and the top right one down. The brake light switches are on the brake pedal assembly. Maybe one is shorted the contacts are open.
I take the tires off and scrap the trailers. I have started changing all the gens over to synthetic oil as long as they are past the 100hr break in. They seem to run better with the synthetic and I think it will extend the engine lifespan.

No load I usually adjust manually to 62hz with a load it will usually go down a tad to 60hz. It's a manual adjustment. Nothing electronic in the generator to hold frequency. With a larger load you may have to make slight adjustments.
Is it an A1 with a master battery switch? If so disconnect the mil cannon plug on the advanced polarity protection box and see what happens. If it's a first gen truck and your dash switch doesn't power anything on then check the 24v ignition relay.
I found a couple 220v 5k heaters cheap online. Was thinking about just ordering one and trying that. I do mostly the 10k gens and I have one for that already.
I have nice ac with heater that makes a great load for the 10s but it's too big for the 5. I need to find a load bank but they are few and far between.
