Come on Frank. Don't lead anyone astray here. You know better.
There is tremendous differences between a "engine" oil and a transmission gear oil. Especially one that works with "yellow metals" . You didn't even get into the whole "shear" and "compression" values of the oil which are vitally...
I love the "older" DT466 engines. Made great power and gave good fuel economy.
By the way. Will I be making a trip up there anytime soon to retrieve a transmission ?
Just wondering.
I would not put it above the frame rail. To easily damaged that way.
I just drilled a new hole about 1.5" above the original and rerouted the cable. Works great. The cable can be a bit of fun trying to get it off the brake shoe lever. I installed new stainless nuts and lubed it up good so in the...
There's lots of little "secrets" transmission rebuilders find out through the years. Since I worked on the larger trucks I had more opportunity's to find out these little gems about the early Allison's and the connections between "GMC" and "Detroit Diesel Allison". Glad this knowledge is finally...
OK Toby. Here are several places I have bought parts from. All sell good quality parts
www.transmissioncenter.com Good quality race parts
www.transpartsonline.com General good quality kits and parts
www.transmissionpartsusa.com General good quality kits and parts
www.coanracing.com...
I would go with the biggest crane you can get. You can always load less then capacity, but you never can load over capacity. The frame can always be beefed up to handle the extra weight. Remember the deuce frame is "not" hardened like the 5 tons are.
I always thought Detroit Diesel should have tried harder to make their 2 stroke engines pass emissions . The 4 stroke units are OK, but you cannot get them to rev like the old 2 strokes could. Man you could make a truck "Fly" with that engine !
Though truth be told I've always been a "Cummins"...
That is a good installation job there WildEd ! I used to install complete A/C units in vehicles when I worked at a A/C shop Phoenix in the late 1970's . Back then most cars and trucks didn't come with factory A/C then.
That was the problem. The Ford unit didn't have one, but according to the Turbo rebuilder I was working with it could be done but the cost was really high. I didn't want to spend $1200.00 at the time though.
Thanks Toby. I'm still feeling pretty sick from the anti-biotic treatment, but I'm getting better. I hope !
Since I retired I no longer have access to my wholesale suppliers. There are several "performance" venders I still use. I'll send you the information.
This is fun ! When I rebuilt the...
Yes CAT has always been expensive to buy and rebuild. It was like the "Cadillac" of engines, while the Detroit Diesel was the "Chevy" of the diesel world. Now I'm afraid CAT has lost all their street cred due to their stupid corporate attitude towards profit at all costs. Their C-9 engine...
Good job finding those clear lenses ! I have several "armored" lights and the clear lenses where a lot more expensive. Good to know I can get replacements if needed.
The only one making parts for our turbos is a Chinese company. The problem is they cost more then a good used turbo. I would look into that instead of trying to rebuild this unit. Also there are turbos that will fit our deuce. The problem is the performance curve. All turbos are designed for a...
One other thing to think about is, can a TH4L80E torque converter be used on the Allison 1540 ? The torque converters are identical between the TH400 and Allison 540 except that Allison uses 6 mounting bolts instead of 3. In fact a lot of rebuilders (myself included) used to use Allison 540...
