If you need 12 volts, you have 12 volts. Essentially, you have an old GM truck with a 100 amp 12 volt alternator to run 12 volt stuff to your heart's content. AND you have another 12 volt alternator, for extra stuff. You CAN get 12 volts from alt2 using the original wiring system, just use +12...
Spin on filters are MUCH better than stanadyne model 80's (that's the stock, box-style filter) for lasting without leaking. I bought a FM100 from stanadyne through Midwest Fuel Injection with a clear site bowl and 3 replacement elements for like $150 shipped to my door (in Canada none the...
I am a Canadian CUCV owner. The guy I bought if from brought it across the border. It had a civilian title and the border guys just treated it like a civvy blazer with a different paint job. Was no big deal. I could see a problem if you signed an agreement with the government about keeping it in...
If you're knowledgeable and handy, you could pull a whole AC system from a scraped civilian blazer, burban or pickup and use that. It would be a straight bolt on if you are ok with losing an alternator and switching to 12 volt. Would probably be cheap too.
Check under the dash, on the passenger side. There is a hole on my M1009 just above the plastic heater box. It may be hidden by sound deadener mat on your truck. Under the hood, it looks like a black rubber hole plug about 1 1/2" diameter. A few inches towards the drivers side of the fuel...
My floor feels warm in the winter, but it's just because of the exhaust - judging by it being warmer where the exhaust gets closer to the floor. I would go feel my tranny if i thought it was heating up my floor more than it should. (with a finger, it's a bad idea to full palm anything you think...
If you use metal line, don't let it rub up against anything metal in the engine bay. Wrap it with a slit fuel line or something.. cause the vibrating engine likes to wear out the walls of thin metal tubes fast. (words of bad experience).
I bet you could hold the balancer from turning with a big flathead stuck in the timing mark leaning on the frame. Also i have lots of old serpentine belts kicking around that i flip outside-in and wrap around stuff that I don't want to turn. Then you grab the excess belt with your hand and...
Agreed.. running an oil line makes me worry about leaks. Just one more way for my old 6.2 to grenade itself. You could use a plumbing "tee" to hook both the original oil light sender and the new one up to the oil gallery. If you use that spot to hook up an oil line for a turbo, that is how it's...
What kind of problems did it solve? just out of interest..
Thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like I'm replacing my balancer this summer.
Aaron, I don't really understand the science behind it - but with a Naturally aspirated Diesel, more fuel = More heat (+ slightly more power). If...
Yeah, I kinda figured as much. Thanks for the reality check.
I've read that even after these blocks develop cracks, sometimes they still go quite a few more miles before they bite the dust.. Is this true? Kinda curious if I find hairline cracks on my 6.2, should go looking for a junkyard 350...
I imagine a little bit of oil build up is normal. I tested my CDR by putting my mouth on the tiny little atmospheric vent hole on the top of it and blowing. If the diaphram is good, you should hear a little click when you blow into it. (you don't have to blow very hard). That's the diaphram...
Thanks. I've never messed with a harmonic damper. Do you think getting a brand name aftermarket replacement would be any better than a "Napa" or equivalent knock-off OEM one?
Taking the CDR valve off the truck and washing it with warm soapy water, then coating it inside and out with WD40 fixed all that for me. You'd be surprised how much black sludge crap will come out. The CDR valve is supposed to open and close to make sure there is just a little vacuum inside the...
I plan on a 5.9 Cummins also, but not right now. Too many projects. I will get a pyrometer before I start messing with the IP. As for head studs and head gaskets - I'll fix it when I break it, or replace the engine then. Harmonic balancer is an interesting idea though.. I assumed that a harmonic...
The t-stat is new this year. The rad hoses are a year old. I just put in a temp sensor and will have a temp gauge soon. I cleaned out my rad this year and was blown away by how much crap came out. I flushed everything out and topped it with a new rad cap. I should be good for overheating, and...
I saw one on a M1009 that had basically had two hitch receivers pointed towards the truck that fit over the tow hook square steels. It had a standard 2" hitch receiver in between pointing away from the truck. It looked solid, might've been a custom job. That'd be great though, no mods to the...
You're right, I only have 155 horsepower and I don't intend on adding a turbo soon, but I am considering turning up the fuel from the pump. I realize that adding fuel probably isn't worth much power, but its an old truck that needs a new engine anyways, so I might as well have a little fun and...
