Only the newer 97+ iirc ford axles have the ball joints.
craigslist is great for finding stuff like that. my buddy sold his front and rear matching set (rear even had disc brakes) for $1200.

No ball joints to worry about, and kingping rebuild kits are cheap.
rotors are $40 ea. calipers are prolly good.
ujoints are $65ea for genuine spicer.
I'd replace the hub bearings anyways, cheap insurance.

you can ground anywhere on the frame (although direct to the front battery may be a better choice for a pump) Just be sure to pul power from teh positive on the front battery.
the 1009 would be a great first vehicle, and a good selling point to the folks is that you are much safer in a blazer than a car in the event of a crash.
dissregard my post, i had a brain fart, he's adding a locker to the front. I was thinking of the other thread mentioning 14bolts. Turns out that NO ONE makes std. cut thick gears for the dana 60. so that locker is useless to you. you could weld up the carrier for now.
