    Classic gasser at Redstone

Looks like all of us were sleeping (including me). I guess there should be some sort punishment. :deadhorse:

    When to lock front hubs

Well the velocity change is transfered through the diff but that's not what causes it. Think about front wheel drive vehicles. They don't have the "hop" because they use CV joints. The u-joint velocity change also applies to driveshafts. That is why you try and keep your inputs and outputs as...

    Classic gasser at Redstone

Dang, I ment to watch that truck and some of the M101s at Redstone and got busy and forgot all about it.aua

    When to lock front hubs

Do you even know what I'm talking about? If not you've never driven a 4X4 locked in on pavement. :cookoo: If it doesn't have anything to do with it then why doesn't it do it in 2X4? If it doesn't have anything to do with it (like you said) it should also hop it 2X4. If I am wrong I'd love to...

    When to lock front hubs

The hop you feel when on hard surfaces in a turn (4X4, hubs locked) has nothing to do with the differential. It is the velocity change in the steering knuckle u-joints. These trucks to not have constant velocity u-joints. When in a turn, the velocity of the axle shaft changes throughout the...

    Multifuel bearings

Bearings are generally cheap for engines. I've seen brearings for other engines of similar size for less than $200. I'd call around to the usual sources and price a set. Unless they are crazy high for some reason, I would replace them. If it was the same crank I wouldn't be too worried about it...

    truck identification

Carnac, I'd be glad to post my VIN on your thread to find out the year but I need to know where to find the number on the frame. I'd also like to know where to check my brake fluid if you happen to know. JUST KIDDING. Please don't blow a gasket. :) Also, thanks for the...

    Deuce PTO Update

It all depends on what you are calling "rough" on the trans gear. If it just has a little rough spot on it but the tooth is for the most part ok, you may be ok without tearing into the trans. As said above, better find out what caused this before you put it back together. If the pto is...

    truck identification

:ditto: The frame number will tell all. I've seen many trucks with the wrong data plate.

    12v winch on 24v

I went out and bought a 8,000lb 12v winch last week from Harbor Freight. I winched a deuce upon the trailer with nothing but a battery and it handled it with ease. Looks like this setup is going to work fine.

    Junk piston

My Dad used to work on locomotives. He said he always cringed whenever he was in the engine compartment and they revved the engine. He had seen many "catastrophic uncontained engine failures" and didn't want one to happen while he was in the engine compartment. He talked like these failures were...

    Hello to everyone

Dawsonville. Isn't that where stock car racing was invented? I just saw a show where Larry the cable guy was there making moonshine.

    Winch PTO gaskets

I always check backlash by feel on the output shaft. You have to first see how much slack the pto has in it's own gears and take that into account. It is very hard (if not impossible) to check the backlash by the TM (with a dail indicator) with the trans in the truck.

    Machine tool coolant???

:ditto: I'd stay away from this stuff. If it's used it's going to have a bunch of abrasives in it not to mention all the water.

    Installing winch seals

You can tap them in with a hammer but you have to be careful or you will destroy the seals. There is kind of a art to it to get it sarted but the main thing is to just be patient and try not to force it. Also make sure you only drive on the outer edge. One miss lick and the seal is ruined. The...

    pto

A power steering pump is going to be awfully slow on a dump. You could also go with a electric pump but they are too slow for my taste also. Many people here have went with a electric pump and are satisfied though. I used a transfer case PTO to run my dump. Mainly because that's what I had...

power limitations of a 250 Cummins?

I guess I was misleading a little when I said it was a "drop in". I know there would be some minor modifications but the engine is basicly they same platform as the higher hp engines. You would also have to find a place to stuff a intercooler and wire the electronics if you wanted to go with a...

What holds the ends into the dogbones

While we are talking about dogbone bushings, I haven't changed them out on a military truck but have changed them on civilain trucks. The easiest way I've found is to remove the old ones by beating the rubber out with a hammer and then take a torch and carefully cut the metal band out (by...

    Start Switch

Are you talking about the main power switch? If so I've got a used one or can get you a new one. The starter switch is a button on every deuce I've seen.

power limitations of a 250 Cummins?

You can add a turbo to get a few horses and increase the fuel setting a little but that's about it. Nobody really goes to great lengths to "hop up" the 250 because you can just drop a 500+ hp model in the same place. They are dimensionally the same size and the same cid (855cid).
