Don't know why you are wheeling on ATV trails...but since you plan on getting crazy just to wheel them, get a Jeep Cherokee. The engine and transmission conversion parts are already available.

I'm pretty happy with my slightly modified M1028.
The front locker can get annoying though, right now I cruise around in 4wd because its icy on the back roads. Turning on dry pavement sounds and feels nasty.
That usually doesn't mean a hub problem. Usually it is one of the rear driveshaft u-joints is bad. It could also just be the extra play from the detroit locker, if you were on any sort of uneven ground it will be more apparent.
After the glow plugs cycle I usually hold the pedal halfway down, crank it for 5 seconds, pause, and crank it again. When its super cold I cycle the plugs twice. Hasn't failed to start yet, and I don't have anywhere to plug in.
I cruise at 65MPH at approximately 2300RPM with 42's, which is pretty comfortable. Obviously you wont need to go that big, but grabbing a few inches more of tire will help you out.
Also, I hardly ever drive this monster on the highway. Most of my driving is under 55.
It probably is the brakes. I've had the brake shoe retaining pins break inside the drum, and the spring went for a ride inside. Would squeal intermittently.
Bearings tend to groan, but I guess its possible they will squeak.
You have to replace both batteries at the same time.
And this doesn't even sound right at all and should be looked into, "There is an aftermarket radio installed but I'm not sure if this could be the problem since the PO didn't seem to have a problem with it. I don't think this is the case...
This was what I was thinking as well. The humvee up armor kit added anywhere from 1000 to 4000 pounds depending on the level. I don't think the 6.2 diesel could handle much REAL armor and still move.
