My M1009 starter ever so often grinds. I let it cool for a minute or so and it engages just fine. Should I remove the starter shim to allow the starter and flywheel to engage about 1 or 2 mm closer? Would this harm anything?

Sounds like you may have sheared off a bolt and the starter is shifted and not engaging the flywheel. Check to see if it is loose.

If thread locker had been used, I would have had a much harder time removing the broken one. No locker for me; just periodic checking and tightening.

Was very lucky. M1009 starter sheared off outer bolt and failed to engage flywheel. The front bracket had come apart from the block and the torque snapped the bolt. Got two new bolts from GM and the block bolt from Home Depot thanks to the information in the sticky. Had it back on in under...
