The only thing that keeps me from getting a gear reduction starter is my lingering suspicion that they are more prone to overheat in extended cranking. I have no proof one way or the other.
Also, when I needed to replace mine, the only thing NAPA had in stock was the non-reduction type.
RE: Re: Biofuels
If we can stop diverting arable land from food production to fuel production, instead using the vast areas of the Southwest deserts to produce algae or somesuch, it might be workable. As is now, the change to ethanol is driving up food prices.
I'm interested in this stuff...
Hey all,
Can anyone comment on the possibility of pulling an M105 trailer behind a M1009 while unloaded? It seems I may have a trailer on the way, but I don't have an easy way to tow it at the moment except by hooking up to my M1009.
Wouldn't be going too far, some highway miles though. Good...
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows the size of the transmission to engine bolts offhand. I've been trying to find the source of the knocking noise coming from under my M1009, and it probably isn't helping that I'm missing some of those bolts....
doghead's assumption is correct - the 6.2L diesels use shims for the stock starter and some remans. Some replacement starters don't need them - these will say NO SHIM on them. There may be different sizes of shim, I'm not sure since mine doesn't use one.
I've also had starters grind and not...

This is register-biscuit speak for "I have no idea what the hell you just said but I'm going to sell you something to make you go away." You've got a 12V unit.
BigB,
Hope you kept the receipt for that AutoZone starter - you'll be replacing it again soon enough. In my experience, anything reman from that chain isn't worth much except as a doorstop. Also as CCatlett let on, AutoZone can't test a 24V starter properly, their machine isn't capable of it...
Hope I'm not too late to the party!
VIN: 1G8ED18J7EF128814
Reg: NF02XX
No bumper numbers, the only history I have on it is that it came out of Texas.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks all for the suggestions!
Did some further testing today - noise is louder in reverse than in other gears, and it IS present in Park and Neutral - just not loud enough for me to hear when it's out in the yard. In the garage, though, I can just hear it over the engine.
How would I check...
The transmission in my M1009 has been acting up a bit lately, and I'm hoping I can figure it out before the solution becomes expensive.
Symptoms I've noticed are a lot of chattering at idle and low RPMs when it's cold. No noise in neutral, seems to smooth out at higher engine speeds. Happens...
Re: RE: Starting below 0 degrees?
You could ask about buying Armada's - comes with a M1009 attached though 8)
I've seen bits and pieces come up on ebay from time to time, usually not identified as arctic kit parts. If there are any complete kits still out there, whoever has them doesn't...
RE: Re: RE: Winter is coming...winterizing ideas
I've had some problems starting when my 1009 is out of service for more than a few days. I'm beginning to suspect either weak batteries or an air leak in the fuel system. Preparing to pull out the GPs next week and check them - has anyone used...
You can also order them through NAPA - it's not in their normal line though, so get someone who knows the parts books backwards and forwards. They have the gear reduction type and the direct drive type. I paid ~$300 for mine after the '24V' gear reduction unit I had went south for the third...
Agree with tsmall - drive it around a bit, listen for noises, feel for vibrations. Jack up the right wheel and try to move it side-to-side to check the front end. Eyeball the u-joints, break out the grease gun and hit all those zerks.
For info on mods, you can't go wrong poking about the...
I know, I know, it's like looking for Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster, but I thought I'd make the effort anyway.
I'm trying to find anyone who has for sale or trade a CUCV Arctic Weatherization Kit, or parts of said - PM please. I know a few guys out there have them installed - I'd like to...
JohnFire,
The symptoms you are describing sound a bit like the problems I had when my drag link and tie rod ends needed replacing. I'd recheck all those, including the pitman arm where it attaches to the steering box. If all those are tight, I'd suspect the steering box.
I seem to recall the frames are the same between the military and civvie versions, but I couldn't prove it. You might want to check the ColoradoK5.com forums, someone there might be able to provide measurements.
