The only thing that keeps me from getting a gear reduction starter is my lingering suspicion that they are more prone to overheat in extended cranking. I have no proof one way or the other. Also, when I needed to replace mine, the only thing NAPA had in stock was the non-reduction type.

doghead's assumption is correct - the 6.2L diesels use shims for the stock starter and some remans. Some replacement starters don't need them - these will say NO SHIM on them. There may be different sizes of shim, I'm not sure since mine doesn't use one. I've also had starters grind and not...

BigB, Hope you kept the receipt for that AutoZone starter - you'll be replacing it again soon enough. In my experience, anything reman from that chain isn't worth much except as a doorstop. Also as CCatlett let on, AutoZone can't test a 24V starter properly, their machine isn't capable of it...

JohnFire, The symptoms you are describing sound a bit like the problems I had when my drag link and tie rod ends needed replacing. I'd recheck all those, including the pitman arm where it attaches to the steering box. If all those are tight, I'd suspect the steering box.

I seem to recall the frames are the same between the military and civvie versions, but I couldn't prove it. You might want to check the ColoradoK5.com forums, someone there might be able to provide measurements.
