I've heard that many BIG TRUCK repair shops have the ability to do brake relining.
This service might be available at an automotive/truck machine or supply shop as well.
IF DONE CORRECTLY these are as good as new.
Probably DOES cost more for this sort of thing in CA.
Stricter emissions & environmental impact requirements, higher cost of living, and a strong desire of service providers to make an extra buck wherever they can...
All of this increases the price of things.
I love CA (I grew up...
Update!
Just wanted to update you guys on the oil leak issue.
Turns out that the PO had overfilled the crankcase by at least 3 GALLONS (not counting what had already leaked out from varoius places...)!
Oil level has been dropped to the correct level, & a leak at the base...
Yeah, seems like Memphis & Alpha Heaven are the largest suppliers. But I think even they are cutting back on what they carry.
I recently bought 2 brand-new complete M211 doors from Memphis at an unbelieveably low price, as they just don't want to store them anymore.
And they used to do...
THANKS for inputs!!
THANKS Guys for all of your answers & suggestions!
The repair shop has disassembled the rear wheel bearing assys again...
They are inspecting the bearings & races, and will be packing them with a non-Moly high temp grease prior to reinstall.
For your reference here's a...
So is there a preferred place to get the "correct" seals that don't cause this problem? OR is modifying the seal the only solution?
BTW: The new seals that were just installed came from Memphis.
I've read the threads that discuss the seals causing heat builld up.
& I don't 100% understand...
I respectfully disagree.
While the 3 threads are indeed related to the same issue that I'm currently experiencing, I OBVIOUSLY felt that the 3 topics were distinct enough to warrant 3 distinct threads.
Now with the 3 threads combined into 1 the responses are somewhat confusing, and the...
Brake is not dragging. Already checked that. Wheel spins freely when jacked up off the ground.
But you DEFINITELY CAN't hold your hand to the cap for more than a few seconds before it gets too hot! 180 degrees! "OUCH!"
(I'm suspecting incorrect bearing preload, or bad bearings, or maybe even...
Wheel Bearing Grease
What is the correct or preferred wheel bearing grease for the Deuce?
My mechanic said that the grease that was in there at disassembly was clear. Looked like general purpose grease.
He put in Red Synthetic Heavy Duty Moly Grease when he replaced the seals.
Now my...
Wheel Bearing Preload Torque
What is the correct Rear Wheel Bearing Preload Torque & Final Torque?
& what is the correct procedure?
I've seen some posts on front wheels that say preload to 50 ft lb while rotating wheel, then back off 1/4 turn, & then install jamb nut to 100-150ft-lbs.
Is...
What is the acceptable operating temp for a wheel bearing?
What temp is too hot?
I just had the rear wheel seals on the passenger side replaced and now they are running 130 degrees after a short 10 minute drive on the freeway, 180 degrees after a 20 minute freeway drive. The driver's side...
Hey JamBand,
If you search this forum for "filter" you'll find a thread called "oil filter":
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/early-deuce/10809-oil-filter.html
It has some conflicting numbers in there, but it might send you in the right direction...
IF NOT, just call Memphis Equip on Monday...
Good Question! I want to know also...
Suggest you call or email the guys at Memphis Equipment or Alpha Heaven & ask.
Military vehicles, army surplus vehicles for sale - Memphis Equipment
Alfa Heaven Inc.
I'm sure they'll be happy to give you a generic or cross-reference number...
ATF has a lot of cleaning agents in it.
In the past I've used ATF in engines with dirty hydraulic lifters that were ticking. Added a quart to the motor oil, let it run for awhile, and the lifter ticking would simply disappear.
I've also used ATF in engines that have been stored for a long...
THANKS! [thumbzup]
That's what I'm hoping will be the case with mine.
I only drove it 20miles so I'm hoping that the clutch didn't get too much oil on it.
The shop I took it to has already corrected the oil level, gets the rear axle seals in tomorrow morning (from Memphis Equip), and will...
I think you want the Lubrication Order, dated 30April1983, LO 9-2320-209-12-1.
(See Deuce FAQ link at the top of the Deuce Forum page.)
This lists fluid types, capacities, service intervals, and has all of the appropriate diagrams locating lube points.
ALTHOUGH I think it is a bit outdated...
Sometimes a Jerry Can is used to carry drinking water (& it is clearly labeled as such to avoid any confusion!).
Could be that they wanted a nice cool spot under the truck & away from the heat of the engine....
