    Help! Newbie here

The last time I went looking for a black crank handle, I spent six months surfing eBay for one, then watched it go for twice what I was prepared to pay. If you really must have one in black, go to a junkyard, find a chrome one, sand off the chrome, prime, and paint. As far as I know, there is...

    CUCV longevity

I would say the problem mostly lies not with design or construction of the CUCV, but with the expectations of the end user, in this case, the military. When used as a light utility and cargo vehicle, the CUCV does just fine. What the military needed was more than the CUCV could deliver, but that...

    Colman's Shackles

Sorry, that's 1 and 5/8" on the shackles. About 1 and 1/2" on the frame extension.

    Colman's Shackles

Hmmm, I wonder what those dimensions they give mean - measuring the ones on my M1009, I get 1 5/8" between the mounting points, 1" pin, and it weighs 3.1lbs without the pin and near 4lbs with the pin. Anything that fits over the shackle mounts and has a 1" pin will work. Those might fit the...

    Concept pics

Bumping this thread to say, if that slantback M1009 was real, I'd be all over it like Charlie Sheen on benzoylmethylecgonine.

    New toy I just got

So only 80% of conversions will have something wrong with them. :-P

    multifuel conversion

Somewhere I have a pic of a deuce multifuel engine sitting in the bed of a M1008. Will post if I find it. There is no way it would fit under the hood!

    Gen 1 light

It's (probably) a harmless quirk. Sometimes it's a loose belt on the alternator, so check that first off. Alternators sometimes need to be driven above idle revs before the regulator feed the field coils correctly. Check and clean all the relevant connections.

How does the spare tire mount in the back of a M1009?

It exists solely to make you question why it is there.

Is a CUCV a good first truck to learn mechanical skills?

I agree with all the above posters, CUCVs are a great vehicle to learn wrenching on. The electrical system is straightforward when not modified. Most contemporary cars and trucks are much, much more complicated. As a bonus, CUCVs are cheap enough that you can buy two! One to drive and one for...

    It's just like your Blazer

They aren't too bad... in Europe, where you can get the diesel engine and 6-speed manual transmission. But like almost everything else, they've gotten caught by the SUV=super station wagon craze.

    Interior lights brighter with aceleration?

Your problem could be in the alternator or in that blue box. Probably start by checking the alternator output at idle and under load to see if it varies much. Cleaning all the fuse connections wouldn't be a bad idea either. Check the 12V output of that blue box since that is where the dash is...

    Can't find Alt that fits

With a volt/ohm meter, test for continuity between the output terminals and the alternator case (shouldn't be any on an isolated ground alt). I like to test ALL the alternator terminals on rebuilds to make sure nothing is shorted to the case.

Help... M1009 no wait light now

Pop the hood and have an assistant turn the key while you listen for the relay closing. Odds are the GP module is not cycling. You can start without the plugs, but it's iffy. The manual GP conversion thread will have instructions on how to bypass the GP module and trigger the relay directly. Try...

LMC Rear Window Regulator Goes Out In Record Time!

IIRC, the tailgates are the same sheet metal, only the internals are different.

    looky what I got!

Lucky! I picked up a spare heater a few years back, been looking for the rest of the kit. $600 was a little too hard for me to justify; it really doesn't get much below zero F here.

    Batteries Dying in my CUCV

I've seen a faint glow from the Gen1 light at night, driving with the heater fan on full and hi-beams on. I have always assumed it was caused by a slight drop in alternator output due to the load. Everything that isn't the starting system runs off that side. I've seen a Gen2 light come on at...

    Starter wow's

You can always pull the inspection cover off and rotate the flex plate/flywheel with a long screwdriver to see if it has a bad spot. When mine went, it had a few teeth broken off and was bent slightly, which was causing it to contact something in there. If you have the stock starting system, be...

    I need a jack

The original jack for the M1009 is pretty useless. It gives you enough lift to change the tire on a hard, flat, and level surface, and not much more. I prefer to use a farm jack and a jack stand. Now, I also have an original, just because I think it should be there. Here's a photo of what you...

Who would run straight 24V glow plugs if they could?

I'd be interested in running 24V glow plugs if and only if I could run everything else on 24V; headlights, tail lights, wipers, heater blower, etc. The hybrid system we have is an adaptation to allow what is a mostly 12V civilian vehicle to operate and be started in the middle of a 24V military...
